How many dolphins can you spot in the photo?

At first glance, everything seems simple, almost obvious. A calm sea, a few dolphins leaping joyfully out of the water… and yet. The more you look at this image, the more doubt creeps in. Were there really “a few” dolphins? Or did your brain play a trick on you? This visual puzzle, shared thousands of times online, has managed to fool even the most observant. And you'll soon understand why.

A deceptively simple image

When you first look at the image, your mind immediately identifies the most obvious shapes: well-defined, recognizable dolphins that naturally draw the eye. So far, nothing confusing. But taking a few more seconds, certain lines and shadows begin to tell a different story.

What seemed like a wave becomes a fin. What you thought was a simple outline transforms into a snout. And suddenly, the number of dolphins you had in mind no longer holds true.

The challenge: how many dolphins do you actually see?

The official answer given by the creators of this illusion is surprising:  17 dolphins are hidden in the image. Yes, 17. And yet, many people stop long before that number.

Why? Because some dolphins are clearly visible, while others are cleverly camouflaged. They blend into the background, overlap with each other, or conceal themselves in shapes that the brain interprets differently at first glance.

An organization that covers its tracks

For those who like to understand the logic behind the trap, here's how the dolphins are distributed:

  • The first row hides 5
  • The second row conceals 6
  • The third row also contains 6

But be careful: these “rows” are not always easy to distinguish. Some silhouettes share common outlines, giving the impression that it is a single animal, when in reality there are two, or even three.

Why does our brain make mistakes?

This type of illusion is an excellent example of how our perception works. The brain constantly seeks to simplify visual information. When it recognizes a familiar shape, such as that of a dolphin, it tends to "lock in" this interpretation and ignore additional details.

The result: once you think you've counted all the dolphins, your brain tells you, "Okay, we can move on." And it's precisely at that moment that the hidden dolphins continue to go unnoticed.

This is not a lack of attention, but a natural reflex: our mind prioritizes efficiency over accuracy.

A game that relaxes... while stimulating

This is also why these puzzles are so popular. They offer a moment of pause, almost meditative. We slow down, we observe, we analyze every detail. And above all, we feel that very particular satisfaction when we finally discover a shape that had eluded us.

Once you've seen all the dolphins, there's no going back. Your gaze will never be able to ignore them again.

And if you enjoy this kind of challenge…

Dolphins are just one example. In the same vein, other images circulate with tigers hidden in the jungle, faces concealed in landscapes, or geometric shapes difficult to count at first glance.

These visual games have a surprisingly beneficial effect: they sharpen concentration, improve shape recognition, and offer a true moment of disconnection, without complex rules or particular effort. A genuine,  playful test of observation .

So, what's your score?

Did you find all 17 dolphins on your first try? Or did you have to come back several times before succeeding? In any case, the pleasure is in the search, not just in the answer.

And if you really want to have some fun, show the image to your loved ones without giving them any clues… you’ll see, the debate always starts very quickly.
