For a few minutes, the daylight will begin to change.
The Sun will slowly disappear behind the Moon, shadows may look unusual, the sky can become noticeably darker, and people across parts of the Northern Hemisphere will turn their attention upward.
Today, August 12, 2026, a major solar eclipse is crossing the sky. A total solar eclipse will pass through Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain, a small part of Portugal and northern Russia, while a partial solar eclipse will be visible from parts of the United States, Canada, Europe and northwestern Africa.
And that’s what makes today’s event especially interesting for skywatchers in the U.S.
Why is everyone talking about the eclipse?
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon moves between Earth and the Sun and blocks some or all of the Sun’s light from reaching certain areas on Earth.
During a total solar eclipse, the Moon can completely cover the bright face of the Sun for observers inside the narrow path of totality.
But most people in the United States won’t see totality today.
Instead, parts of the U.S. will experience a partial solar eclipse, meaning the Moon will cover only part of the Sun from that location. NASA says the partial eclipse will be visible across portions of the country, extending from Alaska toward areas as far east as North Carolina.

The sky may look strangely different
One of the most fascinating things about an eclipse isn’t simply watching the Moon move across the Sun.
It’s noticing what happens to the world around you.
As sunlight decreases, the surroundings can take on an unusual appearance. Shadows may become more noticeable, the light can feel different, and the landscape can briefly seem almost surreal.
During a total eclipse, the effect is much more dramatic because the Sun’s bright disk disappears completely for observers inside the path of totality.
That’s one reason people travel long distances to experience totality.
But there’s something extremely important to remember

NASA advises that viewers use proper solar viewing equipment designed specifically for eclipses. Ordinary sunglasses—even very dark ones—are not sufficient protection for looking directly at the Sun.
And there’s another detail people sometimes overlook.
A regular camera, telescope or pair of binoculars should not be pointed at the Sun without an appropriate solar filter designed for that optical equipment. The concentrated sunlight can cause serious eye damage.
So the safest approach is simple:
Don’t look directly at the Sun without proper solar protection.
Why does the Moon cover the Sun so perfectly?
This is one of the strangest coincidences in our sky.
The Sun is vastly larger than the Moon, but it’s also vastly farther away.

Today’s eclipse is not the same everywhere
If you’re seeing photos online today, don’t assume everyone is seeing exactly the same thing.
The appearance of the eclipse depends heavily on location.
Someone inside the path of totality can experience the Moon completely covering the Sun.
Someone hundreds or thousands of miles away might see only a portion of the Sun covered.
And someone outside the visibility region won’t see the eclipse at all.
That’s why eclipse maps and local viewing information are so important for today’s event.
